1.0 Introduction

Welcome!

1.1 Overview

Helping adolescents with disabilities use assistive technology in middle school and high school can be challenging given the importance of blending in with peers. As a result, there are often insufficient resources devoted to assist adolescents in building an AT toolkit for navigating life with a disability.

1.2 About Today

Today’s presentation is designed to provide practical approaches for using technology, in and outside of school, for accessing and engaging in the general curriculum. Particular emphasis will be placed on transition and self-advocacy strategies. Participants will receive resource guides of amazing tools and strategies to share with students, parents, and teachers.

The virtual keynote was designed to be a bring your own device (BYOD) presentation in order for everyone to access the digital resources provided. The presentation was developed as a stand-along web site (so we won't be using PowerPoint today). I've divided the presentation into two sections:

First, I'll share some information on assistive technology advocacy strategies for adults (parents and teachers).

Then, we'll focus the bulk of our time on self-advocacy strategies and tools for students.

We'll save 10-15 minutes at the end for Questions and Answers. However, if you have questions as we go along, please post them in the Chat window and we'll stop periodically to address questions.

1.3 Your Turn

As we begin, click on the plus sign (+) on the Padlet below to share your thoughts about the following question:

• Thinking about a young person you know, what types of learning challenges would you like to discover how to overcome to help them be more successful in their school work?
